Memories From a Fading Room

The room is bare now that you've gone away,
no warmth is there to touch my heart turned cold.
Aware that time won't find me without you,
I try to set aside those memories old.

Running fast and far, I seek to find,
a haven, where thoughts of you recede,
a sanctuary for my ailing soul ~
one moment's joy from sowing grieving's seed.

And there beyond the past the future lies,
a shining castle by the sea of time,
calling softly to me as I run ~
luring me with peace I hope to find.

But as I cross the threshold, there I pause.
Sadness slips across my thoughts in great dismay,
for there your absence grows and echoes loudly ~
in empty rooms that take you far away.

No memories there to cherish and to hold ~
only space and wind and air, without you there.
Return, I must, to rooms where you still linger.
Without you, life would be too hard to bear.

The room is bare now that you've gone away,
but within my heart you'll always live and thrive.
Your memories will walk beside me always ~
to remind me you were once there by my side.

* ~ *

Give me the memories, for they have been left,
to bring me joy and laughter when you've gone.
I'll cherish them in sorrow, and in pleasure ~
and hold them closely 'til my life is done.

Pictures

A journey captured in moments rare ~
just a flash of memory.
Images pressed within the heart ~
life's pages bare to see.

An instant fleeting through endless time,
now paused as shutters fall.
Those moments caught within a frame ~
a life of pictures on the wall.

Tiny fragments of mindless joy
displayed with dreams to last.
Silhouetted within the soul,
cherished now ~ beneath the glass.

A life of pictures on the wall,
inanimate ~ yet so alive.
Living, breathing ~ in still-life form,
within the mind they thrive.

A touch, a kiss, a carefree smile,
a dance beneath the sun ~
along the sand and ebbing tide
as fading shadows run.

Wedded laughter ~ eternal bliss,
a birth ~ or two, or three ~
Reminiscent breaths now gone
of those whose souls fly free.

An instant fleeting through endless time,
now paused as shutters fall.
Sharing life's long journey ~
reaching far beyond the wall.

A journey captured in moments rare ~
just a flash of memory.
Images pressed within the heart ~
life's pages bare to see.

SOLILOQUY

By the lakeside, when the cool wind comes to close the eyes of tired day, and the lilies fall asleep in the twilight and the reeds murmur in the gathering dusk, life stands on tip-toe to greet the coming of night.
And in the dark, with all of nature hushed beneath the myriad-spangled dome, you can hear hope's song echoing down the corridors of time.

SHELTERING WINGS

All around you are the friends of other days.
They are hidden from your view, nor can you hear the voices that in long ago you knew so well.
And yet the silence and the solitude is full of kindly thought and sheltering wings.
For love can span the years that lie between the loss of dear ones and the ever-present Now; and when you think of them the spirit wakes again and all unseen, they answer to your call.

HEARD IN THE SILENCE

In the lonely land, where unspoken thought is like the distant voice of a half remembered dream, there is no silence.
For the spirit, in touch with the Infinite, hears the music of the soul throb through the stillness, while dawn's gleaming silver and sunset's crimson glow deck the stage of heaven for the stars to sing.
And in the loneliness we begin to understand the harmony of living.

WIND

The Wind bows down the poplar trees,
The Wind bows down the crested seas;
And he has bowed the heart of me
Under his hand of memory.

O heavy-handed Wind, who goes
Hurting the petals of the rose;
Who leaves the grasses on the hill
Broken and pallid, spent and still!

O heavy-handed Wind, who brings
To me all echoing ancient things:
Echoing sorrow and defeat,
Crying like mourners, hard to meet!

The Wind bows down the poplar trees
And all the ocean's argosies;
But deeper bends the heart of me,
Under his hand of memory.
